Ways to Live More Sustainably

by Client

Earth Day is next month, on April 22nd. This day is an annual event that helps to empower people surrounding environmental issues and, hopefully, to protect our planet’s limited natural resources. In honor of this important day, it would be a good time to analyze some simple habits you can implement in your life, which can in turn help the Earth. These are some easy ways to be better for the Earth, with the overall goal of reducing your carbon footprint. It all has to do with sustainable living. This is simply the practice of being less wasteful to help protect the planet for future generations. Here are some of the best ways and tips to live more sustainably.

Tip #1: Use a Reusable Water Bottle

Here’s a scary fact. 60 million plastic water bottles end up in landfills each day. In the United States alone, 38 billion water bottles end up in landfills each year. That’s a lot of wasted space and damaging plastic for the environment. The easiest way to reduce this amount is to commit to stop buying plastic water bottles. Use a reusable water bottle that you can wash and refill each day. Treat yourself to that cute Stanley one that all the kids are crazy about nowadays.

Tip #2: Reduce Food Waste

So much of the food we buy ends up going into the trash. Plus, as that food rots in landfills, it produces methane gas that isn’t great for climate change. Here are a couple of tips. Don’t overbuy at the grocery store. Try to make smaller trips for only what you know you will cook and eat. You can also start composting in your backyard. It’s simple to do and can help to reduce food waste by recycling the scraps of food you were going to throw away to make fertilizer.

Tip #3: Conserve Energy in Your Home

By using less electricity in your home, you’re going to help to lower your carbon footprint. It’s estimated that 20 percent of all emissions are from home electricity use. So turn off those lights when you aren’t using them. Open up the windows in the summer to use less air conditioning. And in the winter, make sure your home is sealed up in the winter so that you aren’t overusing your heat. That might be putting in better insulation, weather stripping your windows, or using a window insulation kit each year to help use less heat.

Tip #4: Avoid Buying Fast Fashion

Fast fashion is trendy clothing that is cheaply made and inexpensive. It doesn’t last very long, and most of it ends up in landfills. The environmental impact of fast fashion is so detrimental to the planet that most people don’t even realize that the cute top they bought at Zara or H&M is killing the environment. The way to solve this is to shop for quality items that will last. You may spend a little more money, but in the long run, buying less fast fashion is so much better for the environment.

Tip #4: Support Companies That Have Sustainability Practices

Companies are pretty open and transparent about when they are helping the environment. That has to do with things like employee practices, sustainable transport, the materials they use, energy efficiency, and other practices, like recycling. When you support brands that have sustainable practices, it allows those brands to flourish and grow. This will hopefully inspire other companies to implement sustainability practices.

Tip #5: Buy a More Efficient Vehicle

Automakers have come a long way in improving sustainability across entire lineups. Switching to a more efficient model can have an impact on your day-to-day carbon footprint. If you are looking for ways to live a more sustainable lifestyle, then it may be time to look into purchasing a more efficient vehicle from Client.
